Avoid risks associated with PFAS : choose responsible cool roofing

Before committing to the application of cool roofing, it is crucial to carefully examine its composition. You may be surprised to discover what some solutions contain.

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) represent a danger, and it is imperative to choose responsible alternatives, such as green cool roofing solutions, to ensure the health of the environment and individuals.

PFAS : a risk to health and the environment

PFAS, particularly PFOA, PFOS, PVDF, and other fluorinated polymers, are widely used for their water- and oil-repellent properties.

Unfortunately, their persistence in the environment over long periods makes them “forever chemicals.” They tend to accumulate in the tissues of living organisms, causing harmful effects on wildlife, flora, and human health.

Studies have shown that PFAS can disrupt reproduction, development, and survival in wildlife exposed to high concentrations.

Additionally, they are linked to growth, development, immunity, and thyroid function problems in humans, as well as an increased risk of certain cancers.

Given these risks, it is essential to opt for responsible alternatives, such as Drylast CRWP® and Drylast CRWR®, which provide a waterproofing and cool roofing solution without PFAS.

By supporting environmentally friendly technologies, we contribute to a safer and more sustainable future for generations to come.

Growing legislation awareness

It is important to note that legislation on PFAS is rapidly evolving. Many jurisdictions have already imposed restrictions on the use of these substances in various products, including cool roofing coatings.

By choosing PFAS-free alternatives, you are not only protecting your health and the environment, but you are also complying with current regulations and helping promote a more sustainable industry.

European drinking water directive (2020) :

This directive sets maximum concentration limits for PFAS in drinking water at 0.5 µg/L for all PFAS and 0.1 µg/L for 20 specific PFAS considered as a concern.

It requires member states to monitor the presence of PFAS in drinking water and take measures to reduce contamination.

French bill to ban PFAS (2023) :

This bill aims to ban the manufacture, import, sale, and use of all PFAS by 2025, except for certain critical uses where no alternative is available.

It covers a wide range of products, including textiles, kitchen utensils, firefighting foams, and food packaging.

French decree on PFAS analysis in water effluents (2023) :

This decree requires classified installations for environmental protection to analyze 20 specific PFAS in their water effluents.

It aims to identify sources of water contamination and better understand the environmental risks associated with PFAS.

International actions :

The OECD is working on guidelines for managing PFAS, including their elimination and destruction.

The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) is considering adding certain PFAS to the list of banned substances.

A changing future outlook

In addition to these regulatory measures, it is important to note that many manufacturers and distributors of cool roofing products have already taken steps to eliminate PFAS from their products.

By opting for our solution without these concerning substances, we are working together to protect the health of the environment and individuals.
